Why do we celebrate Valmiki Jayanti?

Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated to honour the birth of Maharishi Valmiki, the great sage and poet who wrote the Ramayana, one of India’s most respected epics. He is also known as the Adi Kavi, meaning the first poet, because he introduced the art of poetry in Sanskrit literature.

On this day, people remember his teachings of truth, compassion, and righteousness. Temples and community centres organise special prayers, processions, and readings from the Ramayana. The celebration inspires everyone to follow the path of goodness, knowledge, and humanity that Valmiki taught through his words and life.
