Why does a ship made of iron and steel float in water whereas a small piece of iron sinks in it ?

A ship built of iron and steel is hollow and contains a large amount of air. This trapped air lowers the average density of the ship, making it less than the density of water, which is why the ship floats. In contrast, a solid piece of iron has a density greater than water and therefore sinks.
