Why does Cactus in deserts has spines instead of leaves?

Cactus has spines instead of leaves, this is due to modification of leaves. Leaves of plants have stomata on abaxial side to release respiratory, photosynthetic, and excess water from the plant.
In deserts as water is scarce due to which plants cannot afford to lose water, so, cactus has leaves modified to spines.
