Why does treating symptoms of a disease not help in recovery?

To identify and treat a disease, symptoms are necessary. However, only treating symptoms will not help in recovery. This is because the root cause of disease which is the infectious agent might still persist in the body. 

Therefore, a proper treatment targeting both the symptoms and the pathogen is quintessential. This rules out the chances of recurrence of the disease.
