Detailed Solution

A condenser is a cooling device used in the distillation process. Distillation is a technique for separating two or more liquids based on their differences in boiling points. During distillation, preferential boiling occurs: the liquid with the lower boiling point vaporizes first. These vapors are then cooled and condensed back into liquid form.

Condensation is the process in which vapors are cooled below their boiling point, forming liquid droplets. The liquid collected after this process is called the distillate. Distillation allows us to separate and purify liquid mixtures based on boiling point differences.

To cool the vapors, a condenser is fitted in the distillation apparatus. The condenser is also used in reflux reactions, where the liquid is heated, and the resulting vapors are continuously cooled back into the flask. This ensures that the reaction mixture remains at a constant volume while allowing heating without loss of liquid.

In summary, the main function of a condenser is to:

  1. Cool vapors
  2. Release heat to the surroundings
  3. Collect the liquid back through condensation

This makes it an essential component in both distillation and reflux processes.
