Detailed Solution

In 1956, an act was enacted that declared Sinhala as the official national language. According to the constitution of Sri Lanka, the state should practice and follow Buddhism.
The major social groups were the Sinhala and the Tamil speakers. Sri Lankan Tamils are then classified into two groups- Sri Lankan Tamils and Indian Tamils. There are several religions in Sri Lanka, which include Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. Most Sinhala speakers were Buddhists, so Buddhism was promoted.
