Detailed Solution

Respiration is considered an exothermic reaction because it releases energy in the form of heat. Respiration is a biological process in which organisms convert glucose and oxygen into energy, carbon dioxide, and water. This process occurs in all living organisms, from plants to animals.

During respiration, chemical bonds in glucose are broken, releasing energy that the body uses for various functions like growth, repair, and maintenance. Since this reaction releases energy, it is classified as an exothermic reaction.

Understanding Exothermic Reactions

An exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that releases energy in the form of heat or light. Respiration is a perfect example of an exothermic process because, in addition to energy, it produces heat. This is why we feel warm after performing physical activities; the energy produced during respiration is released as heat.

Steps in the Respiration Process

  • Glycolysis: Glucose is broken down into pyruvate in the cytoplasm, releasing a small amount of energy.
  • Krebs Cycle: Pyruvate enters the mitochondria and undergoes a series of reactions that release more energy.
  • Electron Transport Chain: Energy is finally transferred to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy carrier in cells.

The energy released during these processes is what powers the cells and is ultimately released as heat, making respiration an exothermic reaction.
