Detailed Solution

Unlike poles attract each other because of the magnetic field interaction between them which creates a force pulling them together.

Magnets have two poles — North and South. When a North pole of one magnet is brought near the South pole of another, their magnetic fields interact in such a way that lines of force move from the North to the South. This causes a pulling or attractive force.

  • Like poles (North–North or South–South) repel each other.
  • Unlike poles (North–South) attract each other.

This happens due to the direction of magnetic field lines. The lines from opposite poles combine smoothly, while lines from similar poles push apart. This basic principle is used in compasses, electric motors, and generators.
