Detailed Solution

Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru of Sikhism, was executed by Mughal Emperor Jahangir due to a mix of religious intolerance, political fear, and growing Sikh influence in North India.

  • Religious Intolerance
Jahangir wanted to promote Islam as the dominant religion. Guru Arjan Dev Ji openly preached Sikh teachings, which included ideas from both Hindu and Muslim saints. His refusal to change or remove any part of the Adi Granth (Sikh holy book) angered Jahangir and the orthodox Muslim leaders.
  • Rising Influence of Sikhism
Under Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s leadership, Sikhism was growing rapidly. Many people from different backgrounds were joining the faith. Jahangir saw this unity as a threat to his rule and authority.
  • Alleged Support to Khusrau
Guru Arjan Dev Ji was wrongly accused of helping Jahangir's rebellious son, Khusrau. When Khusrau visited the Guru for blessings, it was seen as political support, adding to the emperor’s suspicion.

Conclusion

Guru Arjan Dev Ji was tortured and martyred in 1606 by Jahangir. His sacrifice became a turning point in Sikh history, showing bravery, commitment to faith, and resistance against oppression.
