Yugoslavia had Serbs as the majority community, whereas the Albanians formed the majority in the region of Kosovo. Many nationalist Serb leaders wanted to ensure the dominance of their community throughout the entire country. They wanted the Albanians to either leave or silently accept the domination of the Serbs. One such illiberal leader was Milosevic, who went on to win the election. As a result, the Milosevic government was very hostile to the Albanians. This adversity developed into an intense ethnic conflict, and Albanians were massacred.
