Europeans were attracted to Africa in the late 19th century for its vast land resources.
They came to Africa to produce cash crops like indigo and extract minerals. Moreover, there was an availability of a cheap labour force ready to work at low wages. The British used multiple methods to recruit and retain workers' labour. They imposed heavy taxes on the workers, which could be paid only by working for wages in plantations and mines. Most of the African countries were not advanced, and they were militarily weak too. Therefore, it was easy to suppress and rule over them.
