Workers in England were hostile to machines and new technology because they feared that they would lose their jobs and livelihood. As new technologies and machines were expensive, manufacturers and industrialists were hesitant to employ them in the nineteenth century in Europe, some British businessmen favoured hand labour over machines. Machines broke down frequently, and their maintenance was costly. In pursuit of work, poor peasants and migrants flocked to cities in great numbers. As a result, the supply of labour exceeded the demand. As a result, low-wage workers were readily available. Industrialists favoured hand labour in seasonal industries where production fluctuated with the seasons, employing people only for the season when they were needed. The equipment available at the time could not create the variety of products necessary in the market.
