Detailed Solution

Widow Remarriage Act was passed in 1856.
In 1856, the Widow Remarriage Act was introduced. Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar suggested that widows could remarry based on ancient literature. British officials followed his recommendation and passed legislation allowing widow remarriage. However, Vidyasagar was criticised by those who disapproved of widow remarriage, and some even boycotted him. Nevertheless, the campaign favouring widow remarriage began to take hold in various regions of the country by the second half of the nineteenth century.
