William Adam was a Scottish missionary who visited the areas of Bengal and Bihar in the 1830s. The Company had instructed that he report on education status in vernacular schools. It was per the British desire to incorporate a western learning style in India. The British needed a ground report on the existing state of education in the country. They believed the previously existing Oriental learning method was unsuitable for modern times. Hence they wanted western ideals to be imparted to the Indians.
