Detailed Solution

Anton Chekhov's short story "The Bet" is based on actual characters and situations. I analyzed this story to demonstrate to the reader who won The Bet. This short story depicts a situation in which a banker and a lawyer wager on the death sentence and life imprisonment. The banker risks two million dollars versus the lawyer's life worth fifteen years. For the next fifteen years, the lawyer was confined within the banker's backyard, with no access to the outside world. It was obvious that any attempt by the lawyer to violate the requirements would result in the lawyer losing the bet.

After fifteen years of stock market speculation, the banker is on the verge of bankruptcy. He will be bankrupt if he pays the lawyer to win the bet. His only way out of his predicament would be to murder the lawyer. When the banker opens the cell door, he finds the lawyer has turned into a skeleton. He finds and reads a letter but soon knows the lawyer intends to lose. He flees five hours before the lawyer's time is up, therefore ending his eligibility to win the bet. Based on the circumstances of the story, I concluded that the banker won the bet and the debate over whether life imprisonment is preferable to death.

Many other aspects of the wager have been challenged. "I'll bet you two million dollars that you wouldn't stay in solitary confinement for five years," according to the story. Using this concept as the wager, it was revealed at the end of the story that the lawyer lost the wager. "The slightest attempt on his part to break the terms, even if only two minutes before the end, released the banker from the responsibility to pay him two million," the rule stated expressly. The regulations had clearly been created but were being violated. "I will leave here five minutes before the agreed-upon time and thereby breach the contract," the lawyer stated. The next morning, they saw the man who lived in the lodge climb out of the window onto the garden, walk to the gate, and then vanish". The lawyer's behavior was clearly to forfeit the wager by departing, resulting in the banker winning the bet.
