Alkanes of 1-4 carbon atoms are gases.

Alkanes of 4-17 carbon atoms are liquids.

Alkanes of 18 or more carbon atoms are solid.

So, with the increase in number of carbon atoms in alkanes, the physical state changes from gas, liquid and solid.
