With the coming of colonial rule, the Ulamas were anxious about the collapse of Muslim dynasties. In Northern India, the Ulamas were deeply concerned about the decline of Muslim dynasties. They feared that the colonial rulers would encourage conversion, changing Muslim personal laws. Ulamas used cheap lithographic presses, published Persian and Urdu translations of the holy scriptures, and printed religious papers and tracts to counter this.
