With the expansion of World trade, the demand for goods began growing. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, merchants from Europe's cities began flocking to the countryside, providing money to peasants and artisans and persuading them to produce for an international market, and thus demand for goods began to grow with the expansion of world trade and the acquisition of colonies in various parts of the world. However, because civic crafts and trade orders were strong in cities, merchants were unable to increase manufacturing within towns. Several producer groups were founded to teach artisans, retain control over production, regulate competition and pricing, and limit new entrants into the field.
