Before the invention of print, books were not only expensive but also difficult to create in large enough quantities. A wider range of people could now read books because of print. But the transition was not so easy. Only those who were literate could read books, and before the 20th century, the literacy rates in the majority of European nations were extremely low. Printers then started releasing well-known ballads and folktales in volumes that were heavily embellished with images. Then, at meetings in villages and in pubs in towns, these were sung and recited.
