Women Participated in large numbers for the first time in Civil Disobedience Movement.
Thousands of women came out of their homes to listen to Gandhiji during the salt march. They produced salt, participated in protest marches, and picketed foreign clothing and alcohol stores. Many were locked up. These women come from wealthy peasant families in rural areas as opposed to high caste families in urban areas. They were moved by Gandhiji's call and started to believe that women had a sacred obligation to serve the country. However, this expanded public role did not inevitably lead to a fundamental shift in how women were perceived in society.
