Work done can be positive, negative, or zero.
“Work is the product of the component of the force in the direction of the displacement and the magnitude of this displacement”.
Mathematically,
= (F cos θ) d
W is the work done by the force.
F is the force, and d is the displacement caused by the force.
θ is the angle between the force vector and the displacement vector.
If the angle between the force and the displacement is 180°. or in the other words, if the force and the displacement are opposite to each other. Then the work done will be negative.
W= F×d×cos 180°
= F×d×(-1)  (as cos 180°=-1)
= -Fd
Friction can therefore produce positive, negative, or no work.
