In May 1945, Germany unconditionally surrendered, ending World War II. Japan's surrender on September 2 ended the war in the East. After the United States detonated atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese gave up. The first nuclear bomb to be used in battle destroyed the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bomb was given the nickname "Little Boy." A second atomic weapon, known as "Fat Man," detonated three days later above the city of Nagasaki. While the Second World War was officially declared over on September 2, 1945, combat went on for a very long time beyond that day in many regions of the world.
