(a) Synaptonemal Complex

The synaptonemal complex is a ladder-like protein structure that appears during prophase I of meiosis. Its main role is to bring homologous chromosomes together for crossing over.

• Consists of two lateral elements and a central element.

(b) Metaphase Plate
