Detailed Solution

The Battle of Buxar was fought in 1764 between the British East India Company and the combined forces of Indian rulers. It marked a turning point in Indian history.

The battle was fought near the town of Buxar in Bihar. The British forces under Hector Munro faced the combined armies of Mir Qasim (Nawab of Bengal), Shuja-ud-Daulah (Nawab of Awadh), and Shah Alam II (Mughal Emperor). The British won because of better organization and military strategy. This victory gave the British control over Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha. It also confirmed their power after the Battle of Plassey (1757).

  • British East India Company got Diwani rights (tax collection) in Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha.
  • Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II became dependent on the Company.
  • It paved the way for British political control in India.
