Detailed Solution
Based on the entry of differentiating electron, into various sublevels, the elements were classified into 4 blocks.
1) s- Block elements 2) p- Block elements
3) d- Block elements 4) f- Block elements
1) s-block elements :
1) The elements in which differentiating electron enters into outermost s-orbital are called s-block elements.
2) The general electronic configuration of s-block elements is ns1–2.
3) s-orbital can accommodate only two electrons. So s-Block contains two groups. They are IA
and IIA Group elements.
4) s-Block elements are arranged in left side of the periodic table.
5) s-Block elements are metals and form ionic compounds.
2) p-Block elements :
1) The elements in which differentiating electron enters into outermost p-orbital are called
p-block elements.
2) The general electronic configuration of p-Block elements is ns2 np1–6.
3) p-orbital can accommodate six electrons. So p-Block contains six groups. They are IIIA, IVA, VA, VIA, VIIA, and VIIIA, group elements.
4) p-Block elements are arranged in right side of the periodic table.
5) Most of p-Block elements are non-metals and forms covalent compounds.
3) d-Block elements :
1) The elements in which differentiating electron enters into penultimate d-orbital are called d-block elements.
2) The general electronic configuration of d-block elements is ns1-2 (n 1) d1-10.
3) d-orbital can accommodate 10 electrons so these elements are arranged in ten groups.
They are IB to VIIB, VIIIB (3 vertical columns)
4) d-block elements are arranged in middle of the periodic table.
5) These elements shows variable oxidation states.
4) f-block elements :
1) The elements in which differentiating electron enters into anti-penultimate f-orbitals are called f-block elements.
2) The general electronic configuration of f-block elements is ns2(n–1)d0–1(n–2)f1–14.
3) These block elements are classified into two series. 4f and 5f series. 4f series is also known as Lanthanide series.
5f series is also known as Actinide series.
4) f-block elements are arranged at bottom of the periodic table.
