The two main functions of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are: 

(1) It protects the brain and spinal cord by acting as a cushion, and 

(2) It helps in removing waste products and maintaining a stable environment for nerve tissues.

Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear, colorless liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It is produced in the choroid plexus of the brain’s ventricles and circulates continuously. Although it has many functions, two of the most important ones are protection and waste removal.

1. Protection and Cushioning

• CSF acts like a shock absorber for the brain and spinal cord.
• It prevents injury during sudden movements like running, jumping, or falling.
• The brain is delicate and floats in CSF, reducing pressure on the skull base.

2. Waste Removal and Homeostasis

• CSF removes metabolic waste products from nerve tissues.
• It helps transport nutrients and hormones.
• Maintains stable pressure and chemical balance around nerve cells.

Other Functions:

• Maintains buoyancy so the brain feels lighter.
• Prevents infections by carrying immune cells.
• Regulates intracranial pressure.
