Detailed Solution

A neutral salt is a chemical compound formed when an acid completely reacts with a base through a neutralization reaction, resulting in a product that has no overall acidic or basic properties in aqueous solution. This neutrality means its aqueous solution has a pH close to 7 at room temperature. The pH neutrality arises because the cation of the salt comes from a strong base, and the anion comes from a strong acid neither ion hydrolyzes in water to produce extra H⁺ or OH⁻ ions.

Example:Sodium chloride (NaCl)

  • Formula: NaCl
  • Name: Sodium chloride
  • Formation reaction:
HCl (strong acid) + NaOH (strong base) → NaCl + H₂O
  • Properties: White crystalline solid, highly soluble in water, and widely used as common table salt. It conducts electricity when dissolved in water because it dissociates into sodium (Na⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻) ions.

Practical applications:

  • Food seasoning & preservation: Essential nutrient for humans and animals.
  • Industrial use: Raw material in manufacturing chlorine, caustic soda, and hydrochloric acid.
  • Water treatment: Used in regeneration of ion-exchange resins in water softeners.

Tip for learning: To identify if a salt is neutral, check if both the acid and base it originates from are strong. If both are strong, the resulting salt is typically neutral.
