Yugoslavia was partitioned into six republics along ethnic lines following World War II and was compelled to remain united by Tito under communist control. But after Tito's death, those republics broke apart as communism was overthrown. Slovenia and Croatia separately proclaimed their total independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Then, a violent battle broke out in Croatia, where Serbs sought to establish their state. After a year, Macedonia peacefully established its state. The Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina came next. However, Bosnian Serbs wished to remain part of the Yugoslav Federation, which sparked a conflict. Up until 2006, Yugoslavia was fraught with war.
