Detailed Solution

Zinc reacts with NaOH, a solution to produce Sodium zincate.
Zn + 2NaOH → Na2ZnO+ H2(g)
Zinc is amphoteric metal as it reacts with both acid and base. It reacts with Sodium hydroxide to form Sodium zincate (Na2ZnO2)  and hydrogen gas. This reaction occurs at a temperature near 550°C. In this process hydrogen is the only gas that is produced, so that is easily distinguishable.
