Zollverein was established in 1834.
Prussia established a customs union, or Zollverein, in 1834, which was joined by most German states. It helped in the reduction of tariff barriers and also diminished the number of currencies from over thirty to two. Napoleon's administrative measures had formed a confederation of 39 states from numerous tiny principalities. Each of these had its own currency, as well as weights and measures. It required time-consuming calculation because each region had its own system of weights and measures, and thus Zolverin was formed to get rid of these.
