Underground stems of potato, ginger, turmeric, zaminkand, Colocasia are modified to store food in them. They also act as organs of perennation to tide over conditions unfavourable for growth.
Sucker, which arises from underground part of stem, growsj initially horizontally and later obliquely and gives rise to a new aerial leafy shoot as in Chrysanthemum, Banana, Pineapple.
