Balbiani rings are sites of RNA and protein synthesis. E.G. Balbiani observed peculiar structures in nuclei of salivary gland cells of midges of Chironomus (Diptera). Balbiani rings or chromosome puffs or swellings of polytene chromosomes in which DNA unfolds into open loops because of intense gene transcription. Polytene chromosomes also found in Drosophila.
