RNA World
Question

The base composition of virus was found to be 20% A, 35% G, 39% T and 6% C. From this data predict the genetic material of the virus.

Moderate
Solution

From the information given above we can clearly understand that it is DNA virus as RNA do not contain the nitrogenous base thymine. Now had the genetic material been double stranded then percentage adenine would be equal to percentage thymine and percentage guanine would be equal to percentage cytosine. But this is clearly not the case. In the data given percentage of adenine, guanine, thymine and cytosine are varying. This is only possible when the genetic material is single stranded.
