Questions

Choose the correct statement.

a
Ribosome acts as a catalyst for the formation of peptide bonds.
b
The code is degenerate or redundant with respect to amino acid Tryptophan.
c
Due to mutations if the codon GAU is changed to GAA, the mutation is described as non-sense mutation.
d
RNA polymerase III of eukaryotes forms only tRNA molecules during transcription.

detailed solution

Correct option is A

Ribosomes not only provide space but also act as catalysts for peptide bond formation. The larger subunit of 70S ribosome has 23S rRNA which acts as peptidyl transferase for peptide bond formation. Genetic code is not degenerate with respect to Tryptophan as it has only one codon UGG. If the codon GAU for amino acid aspartic acid is changed to GAA, it indicates amino acid Glutamic acid which is called mis-sense mutation. In non-sense mutation it has to be changed to non-sense codon. RNA polymerase III of Eukaryotes not only involved in the formation of tRNA molecules but also forms 5S rRNA and Sn RNAs.
