Abscisic acid promotes the closure of stomata by promoting the passive movement of $K^{+} and {Cl}^{-}$ ions from guard cells to subsidiary cells and $H^{+}$ from subsidiary cells to guard cells. Ethylene breaks the dormancy of seeds and buds and promotes seed germination in plants like peanut and spouting in potato tubers. Spring varieties are planted in spring season and come to harvest in the relatively short growing season and they need not face the autumn and winter seasons. Winter varieties of barley or wheat or rye are planted in autumn season, they germinate and over winter in winter, resume growth in spring season, flower and come to harvest around mid-summer. They are long duration varieties compared to spring varieties as they have to witness autumn, winter, spring and summer seasons.
