In the presence of light both light and dark reactions occur because there is continuous availability of ATP and NADPH. As long as ATP and NADPH are available, even the light is switched off, the dark reaction proceeds for some time. Light reaction takes place only in the presence of light. The products of light reaction i.e. ATP and NADPH are used in the dark reaction for fixation of CO2. In the chloroplast stroma, initially sugars are formed and later they are converted to starch.
