A genetically engineered bacterium first used for cleaning the oil spills, was a species of Pseudomonas. Professor Dr. Chakraborty designed a genetically engineered new species of Pseudomonas bacteria which had a great ability to degrade oil. The new bacterial species referred to as Pseudomonas putida is capable of consuming oil one or two orders of magnitude faster than the strains which were known earlier.
