This is not a means for short distance transport
Entry of minerals from cortex to endodermis of root takes place mainly by active transport which is a means of short distance transport. Entry of water from soil into root hair by osmosis is also a means of short distance transport. Movement of ions between guard cells and subsidiary cells by facilitated diffusion and active transport and movement of water between these cells by osmosis are also means of short distance transport. But the movement of water through xylem vessels from root to aerial parts mainly under the influence of transpiration or negative hydrostatic pressure is a means of long distance transport.
