The phenomenon responsible for transfer of trapped solar energy from antenna molecules to reaction centre is inductive resonance. The core antenna chlorophyll a absorb light but do not participate directly in photochemical reactions. However, protein-bound antenna chlorophylls lie very close together such that excitation energy can easily pass between adjacent pigment molecules by inductive resonance or radiation-less energy transfer. The energy of absorbed photons thus migrates through the antenna complex, passing from one chlorophyll molecule to another until it eventually arrives at the reaction center.
