Solution

If in a somatic cell 2n=4. After S phase, the amount of DNA doubles but the number of chromosomes remain the the same, i.e., the chromatids are held by the same centromere. In G₁ phase the number of chromatids in the cell would be 4. Therefore at G₂ phase the number of chromatids would become 8 but the number of chromosomes would still remain 4. In prophase also the same continues, i.e., the number of chromosomes are 4 and the number of chromatids are 8.
