Plant Life Cycles and Alternation of Generations
Question

In some plants male and female gametes do not show independent free living existance. The male and female gametophytes are few celled. They have integumented megasporangia. Life cycle in such plants is described as

Moderate
Solution

The plants with dependent few celled gametophytes on sporophyte and have integumented megasporangia are spermatophytes or flowering plants that include Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. In such plants the life cycle is diplontic and meiosis takes place in microspore and megaspore mother cells. Diplontic life cycle is also seen in a brown alga Fucus which has gametic meiosis. Haplontic life cycle is seen in Algae like Volvox, Spirogyra. Haplodiplontic life cycle is seen in plants with multicellular gametophytes and sporophytes. These are plants such as Brown algae, Red algae, Bryophytes and Pteridophytes.
