In the structure of flagellum as seen under electron microscope, one can observe the following features of a flagellum of eukaryotes.
In fine structure, the flagellum of eukaryotes has a total of 20 microtubules arranged in parallel manner along the length of flagellum with 18 peripheral tubules in 9 doublets and 2 central tubules at distance connected by central bridge. Peripheral microtubules are surrounded by plasma membrane of the cell. Each doublet is connected to the adjacent doublets through inter doublet linkers and also with the central sheath with radial spokes.
