In mint plant the branches of axis arising at the basal region initially grow aerially and eventually bend and come in contact with the soil and strike adventitious roots where ever they come in contact with the soil. Such stems are called as Stolons.
In Chrysanthemum, the branches arise from underground portion of stem and grow horizontally at the beginning and later show oblique growth to come out of the soil and such branches are called suckers.
In Oxalis the stem and its branches have several nodes and internodes and always grow horizontally and spread fast to new areas and have leaves and roots at every node. Such stems are called Runners.
In Opuntia the stem is green aerial and carries out photosynthesis during which it takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide.
