Somatic fusion, also called protoplast fusion, is a type of genetic modification in plants by which two distinct species of plant protoplast are fused together to form a new hybrid plant with the characteristics of both, a somatic hybrid.

Embryo rescue is one of the earliest and successful forms of in-vitro culture techniques that is used to assist in the development of plant embryos that might not survive to become viable plants.
