In nature, lightning and ultraviolet radiation provide enough energy to convert nitrogen to nitrogen oxides (NO, ${NO}_{2}$ , $N_{2} O$ ). NO₂ dissolves in the rain water and forms nitrous and nitric acids that react with alkali radicals to form respective nitrites and nitrates.
