In some plants such as Avicennia, growing in swampy areas, many roots come out of the ground and grow vertically upwards. Such roots, called pneumatophores, help to get oxygen for respiration. These plants also exhibit vivipary, i.e., the seeds do not have a dormancy period and starts germinating whilst it is still attached to the body of the mother. These plants growing in swampy areas do not have underground storage roots.
