The innermost wall layer is the tapetum. It nourishes the developing pollen grains.
Endothecium is the single layered hypodermis of anther wall with hygroscopic thickenings of cellulose and is helpful for dehiscence of anther.
In general, the outer three wall layers perform the function of protection and help in a dehiscence of anther to release the pollen.
