Electrolysis
Question

Aqueous solution of  Na2SO4 is subjected to electrolysis using inert electrodes. Then the true statement is

Difficult
Solution

aqNa2SO4is a salt of SA – SB

pH=7

Due to electrolysis:

 At Cathode

Discharge potential of  H2Ois lesser than Na+

2H2O+2eH2+2OH

At Anode

Discharge potential of  H2O is lesser than SO 42

2H2O4H++4e+O2

          Left over solution is concentrated Na2SO4 . Composition doesn’t change but concentration increases.  pH of a salt of SA-SB always is 7 irrespective of its concentration.
