An aromatic compound X with molecular formula, C9H10O gives the following chemical tests.

i) Forms 2,4-DNP derivative

ii) Reduces Tollen’s reagent.

iii) Undergoes Cannizaro reaction 

iv) On vigorous oxidation 1,2-benzene decarboxylic acid is obtained . X is.


  1. The compound gives DNP due to aldehyde or ketonic group.
  2. It gives tollens test means it is aldehyde group only.
  3. It gives cannizaro reaction means it has no alpha hydrogens.
