Assume that for every increase in height of 1 m, pressure decreases by 10 mmHg. Initially an experimental air balloon of maximum 200 L capacity has 150 L air at 1 atm at
sea-level. At what height, the balloon is expected to burst?

Solution

Balloon will burst when volume > 200 L
$At this point p_{2} = \frac{p_{1} V_{1}}{V} = \frac{1 \times 150}{200}$
= 0.75 atm = 570 mm
Decrease in pressure = 760 - 570 = 190 mm
Height up ro which it can resist bursting $= \frac{190 mm}{10 mm / m} = 19 m$
Thus, at a height above 19 m, balloon will burst.
